The University of Macau (UM) held the 30th UM Scholar Research Forum today (13 January), during which Hu Guanghui, professor in the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science and Technology at UM, delivered a talk titled ‘Exploring Science Through Computation’. The talk examined how computational science, emerging as the ‘third paradigm’ of scientific discovery alongside theory and experimentation, has profoundly reshaped the landscape of modern research.
During the talk, Prof Hu traced the development of computational science, reviewed classical frameworks and recent advances in numerical methods for partial differential equations, and discussed prospects for their deep integration with artificial intelligence. He highlighted how advances in computational power enable researchers to transcend traditional limitations and explore new frontiers of scientific discovery.
Prof Hu’s research focuses on numerical methods for partial differential equations and their applications in computational physics. He has published more than 60 academic papers and has led research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Scientist Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) and the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao. He also serves on the editorial boards of leading journals, including Communications in Computational Physics and Mathematica Numerica Sinica.
