The University of Macau (UM) held the 31st UM Scholar Research Forum today (6 March), during which Todd Sandel, professor in the Department of Communication in the Faculty of Social Sciences at UM, delivered a talk titled ‘“Looking for a Son-in-law”: How Chinese Parents Discuss the Qualities of a Marriageable Child on WeChat’. The talk was well attended by students, faculty, and members of the public.
During the talk, Prof Sandel provided an in-depth analysis of Chinese parents’ concerns about their adult children’s marital status, and the growing trend of parents visiting ‘matchmaking parks’ and joining social media groups to seek partners for their adult children. Prof Sandel also presented his research and discussed how Chinese parents define a ‘marriageable partner’ in WeChat conversations.
澳門大學今(6)日舉行“澳大學人研究講壇”第31講,由澳大社會科學學院傳播系教授申大德(Todd Sandel)以“尋找女婿:中國父母在微信上如何討論子女的適婚特質”為題發表演說。講座吸引一眾師生及公眾參與,現場討論氣氛熱烈。
講座中,申大德深入剖析了中國父母對成年子女婚姻問題的普遍關注,以及前往“相親公園”或加入社交媒體群組代為尋覓伴侶的現象。他結合自身研究,重點探討他們如何在微信上建構“適婚對象”的意義。
申大德的研究領域涵蓋社交媒體實踐、跨文化傳播及跨境移民。他目前擔任國際權威期刊《傳播專論》(Communication Monographs)副主編,曾任國際傳播學會(International Communication Association)語言與社會互動分會主席、《國際與跨文化傳播雜誌》(Journal of International and Intercultural Communication)主編。
